PEI : Structural Features and Key Performance Characteristics
2026-11-05
In high-temperature insulating components, electronic device housings, dielectric films, medical device components and high-performance additive manufacturing parts, material selection typically requires a simultaneous assessment of heat resistance, dimensional stability, electrical insulation, flame retardancy and processability. The reason polyetherimide has long been discussed as a distinct category is that it combines all these requirements within a single class of amorphous thermoplastic materials. The PEI series of materials exhibits a glass transition temperature of 217°C, a relative thermal index of up to 180°C, a limiting oxygen index of approximately 47, and achieves UL 94 V-0 rating at a wall thickness of 0.41 mm, whilst offering good dimensional stability and thermoplastic processability.

The Structural Basis of PEI
PEI is a polymer whose main chain contains both imide units and ether linkages and is generally classified as an important type of thermoplastic polyimide. The imide rings enhance the main chain’s rigidity, polarity and thermal stability, whilst the ether linkages introduce a degree of flexibility to the main chain; the aromatic main chain further supports the modulus and dimensional stability. Consequently, PEI is able to maintain good insulation properties, dimensional stability and thermoplastic processing characteristics even at relatively high temperatures.
PEI: Main Structural Characteristics and Corresponding Properties
Structure / Material Feature | Main Function | Corresponding Application Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
Immediate ring | Improve the rigidity, polarity and thermal stability of the main chain | Conducive to maintaining a high Tg, high-temperature rigidity and long-term heat resistance |
Ether bond | Introduce a certain degree of flexibility to the main chain. | Preserve melt processability and reduce excessive brittleness and poor flowability of the system. |
Aromatic main chain | Improve modulus, strength and dimensional stability | Suitable for structural parts and insulating components requiring high dimensional accuracy |
Amorphous thermoplasticity | No obvious crystalline melting point, suitable for conventional thermoplastic processing | Convenient for injection moulding, extrusion, thermoforming, blow moulding, film processing and some additive manufacturing |
Performance Characteristics and Conditions of Use for PEI
PEI possesses high heat resistance, but its properties extend beyond this. Compared with many materials that emphasise heat resistance alone, PEI also offers electrical insulation, dimensional stability, flame retardancy and thermoplastic processability; it is therefore frequently used in components where thermal, electrical, dimensional and processing requirements must all be met simultaneously.
Performance Item | Typical Performance | Application Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
Heat Resistance | Tg approx. 217°C; RTI of some grades can reach 180°C. | Suitable for structural and insulating components exposed to long-term heat environments |
Electrical Insulation | Applicable for high-temperature insulating parts and dielectric films | Suitable for insulation and dielectric applications in electronics and electrical industries |
Dimensional Stability | Maintains good dimensional stability even at high temperatures | Suitable for precision housings and tight-tolerance components |
Flame Retardancy | Most grades achieve high flame retardancy without additional flame retardants. | Suitable for scenarios requiring flame retardancy and low smoke emission |
Thermoplastic Processability | Injection moulding, extrusion, thermoforming, and blow moulding are available and compatible with some additive manufacturing processes | Easy to process from resin into films, housings and complex structural parts |
Chemical Resistance | Good resistance to various fluids, alcohols, acids and weak aqueous solutions | Suitable for components contacting complex media; verification against specific media is still required |
Several issues to bear in mind when using PEI
PEI refers to a class of materials known as polyetherimides, rather than a specific product. Specific product data published by manufacturers can be used to illustrate the typical characteristics of a particular type of PEI but cannot be directly generalised as a universal conclusion applicable to all PEIs. When considering specific applications, individual assessments must be made taking into account the product type, processing conditions and actual operating conditions.
Points to Clarify | Misconception | Additional Factors to Check |
|---|---|---|
Published product data from manufacturers | Data of one specific grade represents all PEI materials. | Product grade, molecular weight or modification method, filler system, thickness, colour, processing conditions |
High-temperature dielectric applications | A high Tg guarantees qualified high-temperature energy storage performance. | Leakage current, breakdown strength, charge-discharge efficiency and releasable energy under high temperature and high electric field |
Additive manufacturing applications | Printability of the material means the final part is fit for use. | Printing temperature, interlayer bonding, shrinkage and warpage, post-treatment, consistency of finished parts |
Medical device / pharmaceutical equipment applications | Availability of medical supporting documentation qualifies the material for long-term implantation or long-term contact. | Biocompatibility reports, sterilisation method, contact conditions, service life, and implantation restrictions |
Where an application requires a combination of high heat resistance, dimensional stability, electrical insulation, inherent flame retardancy and thermoplastic processability, PEI remains a prime choice of material; however, when the application involves high temperatures and high electric fields, repeated sterilisation, end-use printing or post-disposal treatment, the focus must shift to factors such as wear and tear, suitability for sterilisation, process consistency and degradation behaviour.
