What Is Calcium Hydroxide?

Calcium hydroxide (CAS 1305-62-0) is an inorganic alkaline compound. At room temperature, it is a white powdery solid that is sparingly soluble in water (1.73 g/L at 20°C), insoluble in alcohol, and soluble in glycerol and acids. It releases a large amount of heat when dissolved in acids. The pH of a saturated aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide is 12.4 (at 25°C). Calcium hydroxide decomposes into calcium oxide and water at 580°C. When reacted with acids or acidic oxides, it forms the corresponding salts and water. When reacted with salts, it forms new salts, new bases, basic oxides, or ammonia. It is a strong base with irritating and corrosive properties and is classified as a moderately corrosive irritant. Inhalation of its dust can severely irritate the respiratory tract and may cause pneumonia; skin contact can result in burns and blisters.

How Does Calcium Hydroxide Make It?

Calcium hydroxide can be produced by reacting calcium oxide with water in an environment free of carbon dioxide, or by subjecting calcium salts (such as calcium nitrate) to a double displacement reaction with a strong base (such as potassium hydroxide) in an environment isolated from carbon dioxide, followed by filtration and drying.

What Is Calcium Hydroxide Used For?

Calcium hydroxide is used in the manufacture of cement and furnace linings, and serves as a binding agent in the construction industry; in the metallurgical industry, it is used as a flux; in industrial manufacturing, it is used in sugar production, leather tanning, and glass manufacturing; In the food industry, it can be used as an acidity regulator; soaking fruits and vegetables in lime water helps preserve their crispness; in the medical field, calcium hydroxide inhibits bacterial growth, neutralizes acidic byproducts of inflammation, and promotes the remineralization of dentin that has been preliminarily softened by demineralization.

Storage and Transportation

At the time of shipment, packaging must be intact and the cargo must be securely loaded. During transport, ensure that containers do not leak, collapse, fall, or become damaged. Mixing or transporting this product with flammable or combustible materials, acids, or food-grade chemicals is strictly prohibited. Transportation should be avoided during rainy weather. Store in a cool, well-ventilated warehouse where the relative humidity does not exceed 85%. Packaging must be completely sealed to prevent moisture absorption. Keep separate from flammable or combustible materials and acids; never store them together. The storage area should be equipped with appropriate materials to contain any leaks.
