Ammonium perrhenate (CAS 13598-65-7) appears as white, flaky crystals or fine powder. It dissolves poorly in cold water but mixes readily with hot water. The substance melts at 365°C. When the temperature hits 353°C, it starts to break down and release ammonia gas. It keeps stable in strong alkaline solutions, yet its oxidizing activity is not as strong as potassium permanganate.


This chemical sees wide use in industrial production. It is a key raw material to produce platinum-rhenium bimetallic reforming catalysts and rhenium metal powder and also works as an additive for rhenium-containing alloys. High-purity grades are adopted to make rhenium targets and standard solutions. Since ammonium perrhenate is an oxidizing agent, it will pose safety hazards if it comes into contact with organic substances or reducing agents or gets exposed to high heat. For proper storage, keep it in cool and well-ventilated spaces, and separate it thoroughly from all flammable goods.
