What Is Cetearyl Alcohol ?

Cetostearyl alcohol (CAS 67762-27-0) is a mixture of hexadecyl alcohol (C16H34O) and octadecyl alcohol (C18H38O), containing not less than 40% octadecyl alcohol, with the total content of both not less than 90%, and containing a small amount of tetradecanol. It appears as a white solid or flakes, with a melting point of 49–56°C and a density of 0.811–0.842 g/cm³. It is soluble in ethanol, diethyl ether, and mineral oil, but insoluble in water.
Cetostearyl alcohol can be produced by the reduction of animal and plant fatty acids or through hydrocarbon synthesis. In cosmetics, it serves as a base for creams and lotions, providing lubrication, viscosity enhancement, and emulsion stabilisation, thereby reducing the amount of emulsifier required. In the pharmaceutical field, it is used in the preparation of creams, ointments, and sustained-release tablets; the maximum usage in topical formulations is 12% (for creams) and 70 mg per tablet in oral formulations.
