Introduction
1,3-Benzodioxole (CAS 274-09-9) is a colorless liquid with a melting point of −18°C, a boiling point of 172–173°C (at atmospheric pressure), a density of 1.064 g/mL (at 25°C), a refractive index of 1.539, and a flash point of 55°C. solubility in water is 0.2 g/100 mL (25°C). It is produced from catechol as the starting material by reacting with sodium hydroxide and dichloromethane in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as the solvent, followed by steam distillation. As an organic synthesis intermediate, it is primarily used in the synthesis of berberine, fragrances, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides. It must be stored in a sealed container and is classified as a hazardous material during transport (UN 1993 3/PG 3); it bears an irritant hazard label.
1,3-Benzodioxole is widely used in the preparation of low-toxic pesticides, berberine, jasminoids, sesamol, and antioxidants.
