Introduction

3-Mercaptopropionic acid, chemical formula C₃H₆O₂S, is a sulfur-containing organic compound. At room temperature, it is a colourless liquid with a strong sulfur odor and is toxic. Its boiling point at atmospheric pressure is 217.4 ± 0.0 °C, and its flash point is 93.9 ± 0.0 °C. It is readily soluble in water and organic solvents such as ethanol and benzene. It is primarily used as an intermediate for the pharmaceutical compound fenarol and as a stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Due to its excellent thermal stability, it is suitable for the production of transparent products. It can also serve as an antioxidant, catalyst, and biochemical reagent and is used in fields such as pharmaceutical intermediates and electronic chemicals.

Application

3-Mercaptopropionic acid is a direct raw material for organic chemicals, used in pharmaceutical intermediates and electronic chemicals; it is used as an intermediate for the pharmaceutical fenalo and is also used as a stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride. Like thioglycolic acid, it can be used for transparent products, and has very good thermal stability, which is better than other stabilizers; it is also used as an antioxidant, catalyst and biochemical reagent.
