Introduction
5-Valerolactone (CAS 542-28-9) is a clear, colorless to pale yellow liquid at room temperature. It is highly soluble in water and should be stored in a cool, well-ventilated area, protected from light and kept in a sealed container. The lactone ring structure of this compound exhibits biological and optical activity; it forms the 4-hydroxyvalerate salt when reacted with an aqueous solution of barium hydroxide, and reacts with hydrobromic acid to form 5-bromovaleric acid. It is primarily used as a raw material for the synthesis of valeric acid derivatives, including valeric acid amide, polyesters, and pharmaceutical intermediates, and is involved in the synthesis of prostaglandin-class drug precursors and the antithrombotic drug apixaban.
Application
δ-Valerolactone, referred to as DVL, is a multi-purpose fine chemical intermediate, widely used in pharmaceutical intermediates (such as for the synthesis of pyranidine, cilostazol, etc.), flavors and fragrances, polyester, polyurethane, special solvents, coatings and other fields.
