Betaine CAS 107-43-7 can be extracted from the roots, stems, leaves and fruits of natural plants or chemically synthesized using trimethylamine and chloroacetic acid as raw materials. It is a hygroscopic scaly or prismatic crystal that decomposes when heated to about 310°and tastes sweet. It is a growth-promoting nutritional additive. Pharmaceutical-grade betaine can be used in medicine, cosmetics, food, juice industry, and dental materials. In addition, betaine can also be used in the fermentation industry. It is highly soluble in water, easily soluble in methanol, soluble in ethanol, and difficult to dissolve in ether.
Betaine is a quaternary ammonium alkaloid. It is widely present in animals, plants and microorganisms. It also forms a good dietary source because it is found in wheat, spinach, shellfish and beets.
