Introduction and Application
Choline chloride (CAS 67-48-1) is an organic compound that appears as white, hygroscopic crystals. It is odorless but has a fishy odor, with a melting point of 305°C. A 10% aqueous solution has a pH of 5–6; it is unstable in alkaline solutions, readily soluble in water and ethanol, and insoluble in diethyl ether, petroleum ether, benzene, and carbon disulfide. It is low in toxicity and is used to treat fatty liver and cirrhosis. It is also used as a feed additive for poultry and livestock, stimulating the ovaries to increase egg and litter production and promoting weight gain in poultry, livestock, and fish.
Choline chloride is mainly used in the preparation of cationic polyacrylamide and other additives.
