3-(N,N-dimethyl)propane sulfonate (SDDAB) is also called Lauryl sulfobetaine, or N-Dodecyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate.
Lauryl sulfobetaine is a zwitterionic detergent that interacts with proteins by disrupting the hydrophobic interactions that maintain the tertiary structure of proteins. This causes the protein to unfold and increases its solubility, acting as a detergent.
