Introduction
N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-aminoethanesulfonic acid, or BES, is a zwitterionic buffer and a valuable secondary standard in biochemical research. BES is a sulfonic acid-containing crosslinking agent that induces crosslinks between sulfonated polyimide chains in sulfonated polyimide membranes.
The useful pH range of BES buffer is 6.4 to 7.8. It is one of the "excellent" buffers developed in the 1960s that provides buffering capacity in the pH range of 6.15 to 8.35, making it widely used in biochemical research.
BES buffer is suitable for systems that require the formation of calcium phosphate-DNA complexes (absorbance: < 0.05 at 260 nm, 100 mM).
In addition, BES buffer can be used in the study of molecular biology, biological buffers, molecular biology reagents, and zwitterionic compounds.
