N-[Tris(hydroxymethyl)methyl]-3-amino propanesulfonic acid (TAPS) is a white solid at room temperature and pressure. It emits a volatile pungent odor in the air at room temperature. It is soluble in water and alcohol organic solvents. Tris(hydroxymethyl)methylaminopropanesulfonic acid) is a zwitterionic buffer with an effective pH range of 7.7-9.1. It is mainly used in the basic research fields of biochemistry and molecular biology. For example, it can be used as a buffer component for RNA samples.

Application

It is suitable for electron transfer and phosphorylation studies in chloroplast thin layer preparations. It protects oxygenated hemoglobin from being oxidized to methemoglobin during freeze-drying. It can also be used as a background electrolyte for protein microanalysis by capillary zone electrophoresis.
