Introduction and Application
Silver sulfide has two crystal forms. α-type: black cubic crystals or powder, naturally occurring as argentite. Relative density 7.317. Stable at high temperatures, melting point 825°C, decomposes at higher temperatures. Almost insoluble in water, soluble in potassium cyanide solution, poorly soluble in dilute sulfuric acid, ammonia water, and acidic sodium sulfate solution. Red crystalline disulfide is generated in concentrated potassium sulfide and sodium sulfide solutions. β-type: gray-black orthorhombic crystals or powder, naturally occurring as spiral argentite, relative density 7.326, insoluble in water, soluble in potassium cyanide solution, concentrated sulfuric acid, and nitric acid, generating silver nitrate and sulfur when dissolved in nitric acid, and transforming into α-type at 175°C. Used as analytical reagent.
