Introduction and Application

2-Mesitylenesulfonyl chloride (CAS 773-64-8) is a colourless liquid or white crystalline powder with a density of 1.25 g/cm³, a boiling point of 303.1°C, and a flash point of 137.1°C. It is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as ether and toluene and other organic solvents. It is sensitive to water and corrosive; contact with water causes decomposition. It must be stored sealed and refrigerated under a nitrogen atmosphere. As an organic synthesis intermediate, it is primarily used as a condensation reagent in nucleoside synthesis, to catalyse intramolecular esterification reactions of amino acids, and to react with primary and secondary amines to form sulfonamide compounds.

2-Mesitylenesulfonyl chloride is used as an intramolecular esterification and cyclization reagent for amino acids and other organic syntheses. It is used for intramolecular esterification and amino acid cyclization. It is also used for the protection of guanidine and the synthesis of nucleosides, and the selective sulfonylation of carbohydrates.
