Introduction to Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) CAS 9004-32-4
Carboxymethyl cellulose sodium (CMC Na) is an organic compound, a carboxymethyl derivative of cellulose, and the most important ionic cellulose gum. Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose is typically an anionic polymer compound produced by reacting natural cellulose with caustic soda and chloroacetic acid, with molecular weights ranging from several thousand to millions. CMC Na is a white fibrous or granular powder that is odorless, tasteless, hygroscopic, and easy to disperse in water to form a transparent colloidal solution.

Classification of Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose
Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose can be classified into two types of products based on its different uses: alkaline and neutral. Alkaline, low viscosity (2% aqueous solution) for industrial use, 0.2-0.5 Pa·s; Neutral, industrial medium viscosity (2% aqueous solution) 0.3-0.6 Pa·s, industrial high viscosity (2% aqueous solution) 0.8-1.0 Pa·s.
Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose Applications
Carboxymethyl cellulose sodium is widely used as a drilling mud treatment agent, synthetic detergent, organic cleaning aid, textile printing and dyeing sizing agent, water-soluble gel-like thickening agent for daily chemical products, thickening agent and emulsifier for the pharmaceutical industry, thickening agent for the food industry, adhesive agent for the ceramic industry, industrial paste, sizing agent for the paper industry, etc. Used as a flocculant in water treatment, mainly for wastewater and sludge treatment, it can increase the solid content of the filter cake.
Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose is also a kind of thickening agent. Because of its good hydrophilicity, rehydration and gel effect, it has been widely used in the food industry, and it has also promoted the rapid and healthy development of the food industry to a certain extent.
In the completion fluid, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) mainly controls the viscosity of the fluid, the suspension weight, carries fillers and prevents fluid loss.High viscosity CMC can be used in fracturing fluid to quickly increase the viscosity of fracturing fluid, effectively carry proppant into oil well cracks to establish seepage channels, quickly reduce fluid loss, quickly increase formation pressure, achieve efficient pressure transmission, and leave no product residue without damaging the formation.
