Sodium metabisulfite is an inorganic salt compound that appears as a white or pale yellow crystalline powder or small crystals and has a strong odor of sulfur dioxide. It has a density of 1.4 g/cm³, is soluble in water and glycerol, and is slightly soluble in alcohol; its solubility in water increases with rising temperature.

Applications

Sodium metabisulfite is used in the production of sodium dithionite, sulfadimethoxine, anacine, and caprolactam; it is also used to purify chloroform, benzenesulfonamide, and benzaldehyde. In the photographic industry, it serves as a component of fixing solutions; in the fragrance industry, it is used to produce vanillin; as a preservative in the brewing industry; as a rubber coagulant and a dechlorinating agent for bleached cotton fabrics; as an organic intermediate in printing, dyeing, and leather tanning; as a reducing agent in wastewater treatment for the electroplating industry and oil fields, as well as a mineral processing agent in mining; and in food processing as a preservative, bleaching agent, and leavening agent.

Packaging and Storage

Plastic bag or cardboard barrel packaging, or according to customer requirements.

Store in a sealed container in a cool, dry, and ventilated place; make sure it is moisture-proof and waterproof; and keep it away from fire and heat sources. Do not store or transport with strong acids or alkalis.
