A colorless, transparent liquid with a slightly acidic nature, it is readily biodegradable.
Tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium sulfate urea is primarily used as a flame retardant for textiles, particularly cotton and polyester-cotton textiles. It remains flame-retardant even after repeated washing. It is also used as a broad-spectrum disinfectant in water treatment systems.
