Tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane, a white crystalline solid or powder, has a melting point of 171–172°C and a boiling point of 219–220°C at 1.3 kPa. It is soluble in ethanol and water, slightly soluble in ethyl acetate and benzene, and insoluble in diethyl ether and carbon tetrachloride. It is corrosive to copper and aluminum and is irritating.

Tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane is a non-sodium amino buffer. In body fluids, it reacts with water, thereby reducing its concentration. It is suitable for treating both metabolic acidosis and respiratory acidosis and is an ideal medication for patients with metabolic acidosis complicated by acute respiratory acidosis.

Tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane, commonly known as Tris, is widely used as a solvent for nucleic acids and proteins and is also used as a titration standard.
