Introduction to Cerium Hydroxide

Other Names: ceric hydroxide, cerium hydroxide

Cerium hydroxide is a chemical substance, a light yellow or brownish-yellow powder, insoluble in water and weak acids but soluble in concentrated acids to form the corresponding salts. Absorb CO₂ in the air to produce cerium carbonate.

Cerium Hydroxide Properties:

Name

Cerium Hydroxide

Boiling Point

100°C at 760 mmHg

Molecular Weight

208.145

Vapor Pressure

24.5 mmHg at 25°C

Storage Conditions

Store in a cool, dry place with airtight sealing.

Stability

Sensitive to air. It turns purple when exposed to air and eventually forms cerium(IV) hydroxide (yellow). Absorbs CO₂ in air to form cerium carbonate. It is insoluble in water and soluble in concentrated acids.

Cerium Hydroxide Applications:

  • The glass (color TV glass) industry uses cerium hydroxide as a decolorizing and clarifying agent for glass.
  • In the chemical industry, it is used to prepare automotive exhaust purification catalysts and stabilizers for polyvinyl chloride plastics; it is also used to synthesize cerium naphthalene as a paint drying agent.
  • In the metallurgical industry, it is used as a spheroidizing agent for ductile iron, smelting cerium silicon iron alloy, and also as a raw material for smelting cerium-rich rare earth silicon iron alloy. It is used as an additive in electroplating technology.

Manufacturing Method: Solvent Extraction Method

The mixed light rare earth ore is roasted with sodium carbonate and leached with dilute sulfuric acid to obtain a rare earth sulfate leaching solution. Potassium permanganate and borax are added, and a solution of tributyl phosphate (TBP), di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (P204), and kerosene is used as the extractant to separate cerium and other trivalent rare earths. Using sulfuric acid for back extraction, the residual solution is added to sodium sulfate to form a double salt precipitate. After filtration, washing, conversion with sodium hydroxide, filtration, and drying, cerium hydroxide is obtained.
