What Is Melamine Resin Adhesive?

Melamine resin adhesive is the abbreviated term for melamine-formaldehyde resin adhesive; it is also known as melamine resin adhesive and is a type of amino resin adhesive. Melamine resin adhesive is a colourless aqueous solution of formaldehyde resin formed by the condensation of melamine and formaldehyde in the presence of a catalyst.

Characteristics of Melamine Resin Adhesives

Traditional melamine-formaldehyde resins exhibit higher heat resistance and water resistance than phenolic and urea-formaldehyde resins. Their main advantages are as follows: ① high hardness, high bonding strength, and good wear resistance; ② excellent water resistance and resistance to boiling water; ③ good heat resistance and resistance to aging; ④ Good chemical resistance and electrical insulation; ⑤ High reactivity; ⑥ After curing, the resin film is colourless, transparent, glossy, and flame-resistant. Due to these significant advantages, melamine-formaldehyde resins are widely used in the fields of engineered wood, timber, construction, and paper packaging.

Melamine resins have a high degree of cross-linking and limited deformability within the resin matrix. This causes them to become brittle after curing, resulting in poor impact resistance, stress crack resistance, and stability, which limits their adoption and application in many fields. Furthermore, during the curing process, some hydroxymethyl groups that did not participate in the cross-linking reaction remain in the resin. These hydroxymethyl groups interact with water in the atmosphere, causing the resin to exhibit a certain degree of hygroscopicity. When environmental conditions change, the resin undergoes a cycle of moisture absorption and desorption, gradually generating stress. This leads to cracking in the cured resin, severely affecting its performance. Therefore, it is necessary to modify melamine resins so that melamine-formaldehyde resins not only possess good flowability but also exhibit high toughness and storage stability.

Synthesis and Principles of Melamine Resin

The basic principle behind the formation of resins through the polycondensation of melamine and formaldehyde is similar to that of resins formed by the polycondensation of urea and formaldehyde. Although the reaction process is more complex than that of urea, it is easier to carry out and more likely to proceed to completion. First, an addition reaction occurs to form hydroxymethylmelamine, followed by gradual polycondensation, ultimately resulting in an insoluble, infusible, cross-linked thermosetting resin.
