Introduction and Application

2-[bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino]ethanesulfonic acid (CAS 10191-18-1) is a white solid with a density of 1.4 ± 0.1 g/cm³ and a melting point of 150–155 °C. It is readily soluble in water, with a solubility of up to 3.2 mol/L (at 0°C). It is primarily used as a biological buffer agent with a buffering range of pH 6.6–8.0 (pKa of 7.15 at 20°C). It must be stored in a sealed container in a cool, dry place away from light. It is an irritant and may cause skin irritation, severe eye irritation, and respiratory tract irritation. It is generally not harmful to aquatic environments.

BES (N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-aminoethanesulfonic acid) is a white powder, easily soluble in water, with a pH value of 2.5-5.0. As a biological buffer, it is widely used in laboratory research and development and chemical and pharmaceutical synthesis.
