Introduction and Application
N-Vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (CAS 88-12-0) is a colourless liquid with a melting point of 13–14°C and a boiling point of 193°C (5 kPa) or 249.1 ± 29.0°C (760 mmHg). a density of 1.1 ± 0.1 g/cm³ (25°C), and a refractive index of 1.554. It is miscible with water, ethanol, diethyl ether, and other organic solvents and is produced by the reaction of 2-pyrrolidone with acetylene under high pressure. It is primarily used in the synthesis of polyvinylpyrrolidone (a plasma substitute) and thiopyrrolidone and serves as a papermaking dispersant, dyeing aid, paint additive, and raw material for color film production.
N-Vinyl-2-pyrrolidone is mainly used in the preparation of hair styling gel and medical disinfectant.
