Introduction
4-Amino-3-hydrazino-1,2,4-triazol-5-thiol (AHMT) is a white to beige powder with a foul odour. with a melting point of 228–230 °C (decomposition) and a boiling point of approximately 275 °C. It is primarily used for formaldehyde detection, the derivatisation of neutral monosaccharide compounds in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and for aldehyde classification tests using phase-transfer catalysts. It is synthesised from thiourea and hydrazine hydrate, and its structure has been confirmed by infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). It is irritating to the skin and mucous membranes, has a hazard code of Xi, and must be stored in a sealed container in a cool, dry place away from light.
