Introduction
Allyl heptanoate is a colorless, transparent liquid with a pineapple-like aroma. It is insoluble in water but soluble in most organic solvents. Its melting point is -66°C, boiling point is 210°C, flash point is 180°C, and density is 0.882 (water = 1). This substance is flammable when exposed to open flames, reacts with oxidizing agents, decomposes at high temperatures to release toxic gases, and may undergo self-polymerization, posing a risk of container rupture.
Allyl heptanoate is prepared by the esterification of n-heptanoic acid and allyl alcohol, catalyzed by concentrated sulfuric acid. It is primarily used in the formulation of personal care and food flavorings. Handling requires a closed, well-ventilated area and the use of protective equipment. Store in a cool, dark place, away from sources of ignition and oxidizing agents. In case of a spill, absorb with sand or contain using a berm. Firefighting measures include water spray, foam, or carbon dioxide. In case of contact, rinse thoroughly or seek medical attention. For fire response, move containers to a safe location and cool them.
