Product Details

Introduction:

Ethylbenzene is an aromatic hydrocarbon with the molecular formula C₆H₅C₂H₅ and a molecular weight of 106.15. Under normal conditions, it is a colorless liquid with an aromatic odor and is flammable. Its melting point is −94 °C, its boiling point is 136.2 °C, its flash point is 15 °C, and its relative density is 0.87 (water = 1). It is insoluble in water but miscible with most organic solvents, such as ethanol and ether. In the presence of a catalyst, it undergoes dehydrogenation to form styrene. Nitration yields dinitroethylbenzene or trinitroethylbenzene.
Ethylbenzene is a strong irritant to the skin and mucous membranes and has an anesthetic effect at high concentrations. Short-term, heavy inhalation may cause mild symptoms such as dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, unsteady gait, mild impaired consciousness, and irritation of the eyes and upper respiratory tract; severe cases may result in coma, convulsions, a drop in blood pressure, and respiratory and circulatory failure. Direct inhalation can cause chemical pneumonia and pulmonary edema. Long-term exposure may result in irritation of the eyes and upper respiratory tract, neurasthenia syndrome, and skin symptoms such as roughness, cracking, and peeling. Furthermore, its vapors can form explosive mixtures with air; when exposed to open flames, high heat, or contact with oxidizing agents, there is a risk of combustion or explosion. It reacts violently upon contact with oxidizing agents. Excessively high flow rates can easily generate and accumulate static electricity. Its vapors are heavier than air and can spread to considerable distances in low-lying areas; if exposed to a fire source, they may ignite and flash back.

Applications:

1. Ethylbenzene is used as a raw material for styrene and also used in pharmaceuticals and other organic synthesis.

2. Ethylbenzene is mainly used to produce styrene and then to produce styrene homopolymers and copolymers with styrene as the main component (ABS, AS, etc.). Ethylbenzene is used in small quantities in the organic synthesis industry, such as the production of intermediates such as acetophenone, ethyl anthraquinone, p-nitroacetophenone, and methyl phenyl ketone. It is used as an intermediate for synamycin and chloramphenicol in medicine. It is also used in fragrances.

3. Used as a chromatographic standard substance and solvent, and also used in organic synthesis.
