Introduction
Hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (CAS 112-02-7), commonly abbreviated as CTAC, is a cationic surfactant. It is a white or slightly yellow paste or solid that is readily soluble in hot water and alcoholic solvents such as methanol and ethanol. Hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride possesses softening, emulsifying, antistatic, and bactericidal properties. It exhibits good chemical stability and is resistant to strong acids and bases. It is primarily used in asphalt emulsification, as an additive in hair conditioners, as an antistatic agent for synthetic fibers, in the softening treatment of glass fibers, and in the preparation of mesoporous materials. It is highly toxic to fish and irritating to the eyes; it must be stored in a light-protected, sealed container and kept separate from oxidizing agents.
