Product Details
Introduction
Hexamethyldisilazane is a colorless, transparent liquid that is non-toxic and has a slight amine odor. It hydrolyzes readily, releasing NH3 and forming hexamethyldisiloxane. In the presence of a catalyst, it reacts with alcohols or phenols to form trimethylsilyl alkoxides or trimethylsilyl aryl oxides. When reacted with anhydrous hydrogen chloride, it releases NH₃ or NH₄Cl to form trimethylsilyl chloride. It can be prepared by reacting trimethylsilyl chloride with NH₃.
Hexamethyldisilazane can be used as an alkaline silanization protective agent, an inorganic filler treating agent, and an adhesion promoter for photoresists in photolithography. It is used as a surface hydrophobic treatment agent for fumed silica in the vapor-phase method and as a reagent to provide nitrogen atoms in organic synthesis reactions. It can also serve as an additive for silicon carbide fibers to enhance their heat resistance and strength and as an anti-settling agent in coatings. Additionally, it is used in the preparation of organosilicon compounds.

Applications
Hexamethyldisilazane is used in the production of rubber and pharmaceuticals. It is a tail-reduction agent that reduces surface adsorption on gas chromatography columns. It serves as a pharmaceutical intermediate for amikacin and acts as a hydroxyl and amino group-protecting agent. It is also used in specialized organic synthesis and as a silylation reagent; in industrial applications, it is used in the production of cefamicin.
