Introduction
O-Chlorobenzenesulfonyl isocyanate, also known as 2-chlorobenzenesulfonyl isocyanate, is a colorless oily liquid that has the chemical formula C₇H₄ClNO₃S, a molecular weight of 217.63, and a CAS number of 64900-65-8. It is a colorless oily liquid with a density of 1.484 g/mL (25°C), a boiling point of 285°C, and a flash point of >113°C. It decomposes in water and air and is soluble in solvents such as acetonitrile and benzene.
This substance is prepared by reacting o-chlorobenzenesulfonamide with phosgene in xylene solvent, using triethylamine and n-butyl isocyanate as raw materials. After the reflux reaction, the fraction is collected by vacuum distillation at 130-140℃ (0.133 kPa). It is mainly used as an intermediate for the sulfonylurea herbicide chlorsulfuron, applied in the field of pesticide production. Storage should be kept sealed in a cool and dry environment, which is highly corrosive and can cause skin burns and eye damage upon contact. Protective equipment should be worn during operation.
