Introduction
Polyacrylamide, abbreviated as PAM, is a linear, water-soluble polymer and one of the most widely used types of water-soluble polymers. Polyacrylamide is a white powder that is non-toxic and exhibits good thermal stability at 100°C; however, when heated to excessively high temperatures (above 150°C), it decomposes to release nitrogen gas. It is highly soluble in water and hygroscopic but insoluble in common organic solvents (such as benzene, esters, and acetone). Polyacrylamide exhibits good biocompatibility and high viscosity and is readily miscible with most surfactants.
Polyacrylamide is a hard glassy solid at room temperature. Its viscosity becomes stickier as the molecular weight of the polymer increases.
Polyacrylamide is non-toxic, has a high molecular weight, and is highly water-soluble. Various ionic groups can be introduced, and the molecular weight can be adjusted to obtain specific properties. There are cationic polyacrylamide, anionic polyacrylamide, and zwitterionic polyacrylamide.

Application
Water Treatment Industry
Polyacrylamide has good adhesion to many solid surfaces and dissolved substances. It can adsorb and bridge suspended particles dispersed in the solution, causing the suspended particles to flocculate, making it easier to filter and separate. It is widely used in the water treatment industry.
Applications in Oil Production
Polyacrylamide is a versatile class of oilfield chemical treatment agents widely used in petroleum extraction processes such as drilling, cementing, well completion, workover, fracturing, acidising, water injection, water blocking and profile control and enhanced oil recovery operations.
The Paper Industry
Polyacrylamide is widely used in the papermaking industry as retention aids, filtration aids, and uniformity agents to improve paper quality, enhance pulp dewatering performance, and increase the retention rate of fine fibres and fillers, while reducing raw material consumption and environmental pollution. When used as a dispersant, it can improve paper uniformity.
Medical Materials
Polyacrylamide gel can be used as a non-prothrombin granulation agent in surgical applications, as a raw material for contact lenses, as a coating material for microcapsules, and in the manufacture of high-quality hemostatic ties, feminine hygiene pads, and baby nappies.
