Product Description
Product Details
Introduction
Titanium ethoxide is an organic compound, typically a colourless to pale yellow oily liquid, with a relative density of 1.107 (25°C), a melting point of 40°C, a boiling point of 133–135°C (6.67 kPa), and a refractive index of 1.5082 (25°C). It is soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, diethyl ether, benzene, and chloroform. Upon contact with moisture or water, titanium ethoxide rapidly hydrolyses to form polymers containing Ti-O-Ti. Hydrolysis and polymerisation proceed gradually, yielding a series of intermediate polymers; it readily exchanges hydroxyl groups with higher alcohols or other hydroxyl-containing compounds. When heated, it reacts very readily with higher esters of organic acids via an exchange reaction, and it also readily reacts with organic acids and acid anhydrides to form titanyl compounds; it has good thermal stability and does not undergo changes during distillation at atmospheric pressure, but prolonged heating may result in polycondensation.
Titanium ethoxide is low in toxicity but is irritating to the eyes, respiratory tract, and skin; a self-contained breathing apparatus should be worn when potential exposure to its vapours is expected. Tetraethyl titanate is flammable; it poses a risk of combustion or explosion when exposed to open flames or oxidising agents, and heated containers may explode. It reacts with water or water vapour to release toxic and flammable gases.
