Introduction:
1,3-Diethylbenzene is an organic compound that is a colorless liquid at room temperature with an aromatic odor. It is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and diethyl ether. Its primary uses include as a solvent and an intermediate in organic synthesis.
1,3-Diethylbenzene has a density of 0.864 g/cm³, a boiling point of 181.7°C, and a flash point of 50.6°C. It is flammable, and its vapors can form explosive mixtures with air. It is toxic to aquatic organisms; the LC₅₀ (96 h) for the black-headed minnow is 4.5 mg/L, and it exhibits bioaccumulation in carp. Long-term exposure may cause liver and kidney damage. In case of an emergency, wear protective equipment; in the event of a spill, cover the area with absorbent material or foam; after contact, rinse immediately and seek medical attention. For safe handling, wear impermeable work clothing, rubber gloves, and safety goggles.
Applications:
1,3-Diethylbenzene can be used as the raw material for producing m-diethylene, m-diketobenzene dicarboxylate, m-monoketobenzene dicarboxylate, DETX (photoinitiator) and m-ethylacetophenone.
