Aspartame is a high-intensity sweetener with the chemical name L-aspartate-L-phenylalanine methyl ester. Aspartame is a dipeptide composed of two amino acids: L-aspartic acid and L-phenylalanine. These ingredients are commonly found in everyday foods and are metabolised by the human body. Aspartame tastes sweet and is about 200-300 times sweeter than sucrose.
Aspartame is approved for use in more than 130 countries and regions around the world. Aspartame can be found in more than 4,000 different foods and beverages.
