Product Details
Introduction
At room temperature, diethyl glutarate is a colorless, syrupy liquid with a density of 1.022 g/cm³ (20/4°C), a melting point of −24.1°C, a boiling point of 236.5°C (at atmospheric pressure), a flash point of 96°C, and a refractive index of 1.424. It is slightly soluble in water and readily soluble in organic solvents such as alcohols and ethers.
Diethyl glutarate serves as an intermediate in organic synthesis and is primarily used in the production of pharmaceuticals, plasticizers, and specialty lubricants. It can be prepared by reflux esterification of glutaric anhydride with anhydrous ethanol under the catalysis of concentrated sulfuric acid. It is chemically stable at room temperature and standard pressure but should be protected from contact with oxidizing agents. It is irritating to the eyes and skin and is classified as a low-toxicity substance (oral LD50 in rats >1600 mg/kg). It may burn when exposed to high heat or open flames, decomposing into carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Store in a cool, well-ventilated area, keeping the container sealed and dry.
