Product Details
Introduction
Tetramethyl silicate is an organic compound that is typically a colorless, transparent liquid under normal conditions. It has a distinctive odor, a relative density of 1.02, a melting point of -2°C, a boiling point of 121°C, and a closed-cup flash point of 20°C. It is insoluble in water but miscible with organic solvents in any proportion. It is unstable in the presence of moisture and gradually decomposes into silica and methanol when exposed to air.
Tetramethyl silicate is toxic and corrosive; inhalation, contact (skin, eyes), or ingestion may cause serious health damage, burns, or death. Reaction with water or moist air releases methanol and a large amount of heat, increasing the concentration of fumes in the air. Tetramethyl silicate has a low flash point and is highly flammable; fires can produce irritating, corrosive, and toxic gases. Firefighting water or water used for dilution is corrosive and toxic and may cause environmental contamination.
