What Is Dimethyl Adipate?

2026-07-29

Dimethyl adipate (DMA) is a colourless, transparent liquid with the chemical formula C₈H₁₄O₄, CAS No. 627-93-0, molecular weight 174.19, density 1.062 g/cm³ (20°C), melting point 8°C, boiling point 109–110°C (14 mmHg) or 228.7°C (760 mmHg), and flash point 107.2°C. It is insoluble in water but soluble in alcohols and ethers; its refractive index is 1.428 (20°C). It is classified as a low-toxicity substance and is used industrially as a synthetic intermediate and a raw material for pharmaceuticals and fragrances. It also serves as a plasticiser and a high-boiling-point solvent and is used in the production of 1,6-hexanediol and as a standard substance for gas chromatography. It should be stored in a cool, dry place in a sealed container, away from oxidising agents, acids, and bases.
