Diisononyl phthalate is a colorless or light yellow transparent oily liquid at room temperature. It is insoluble in water but soluble in most organic solvents. It can ignite when exposed to high temperatures, open flames, and strong oxidants, releasing irritating smoke and gases such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. It has a slight odor. Density (20°C, g/cm³): 0.971-0.977.

Diisononyl phthalate is a general-purpose primary plasticizer with excellent performance. This product has good compatibility with PVC and will not precipitate even if used in large quantities; its volatility, migration, and non-toxicity are better than DOP's, and it can give products good light resistance, heat resistance, aging resistance, and electrical insulation properties, and its comprehensive performance is better than DOP's. Since products produced with diisononyl phthalate have good water resistance and extraction resistance, low toxicity, aging resistance, and excellent electrical insulation properties, they are widely used in various soft PVC products, such as wires and cables.
