Introduction

Polybutylene succinate (PBS) is a polymer with CAS number 25777-14-4. It is a white, semi-crystalline polymer with a density of 1.3 g/mL at 25°C (lit.), a melting point of 110–115°C, and a flash point of 110.9°C. It is readily soluble in chloroform, slightly soluble in tetrahydrofuran, and practically insoluble in water, methanol, or ethanol. Depending on molecular structure and molecular weight, its crystallinity ranges from 30% to 60%, with a crystallization temperature of 75°C. Its structural units contain ester groups that are easily hydrolyzed. Under conditions such as composting, where it comes into contact with specific microorganisms, it is readily degraded and metabolized by various microorganisms in nature or by enzymes within animals and plants, ultimately forming CO₂ and H₂O. The chemical structure of the molecules, molecular weight, particle size distribution, melting point, and crystallinity all have a significant impact on the degradation process.

Application

PBS degrades naturally in soil and marine environments, effectively reducing white pollution. Polybutylene succinate (PBS) can be used to manufacture garbage bags, packaging bags, cosmetic bottles, various plastic cards, baby diapers, agricultural materials, and sustained-release drug delivery matrices, among other applications; it is also used in various plastic products related to environmental protection, such as geogrids and films for civil engineering and landscaping. It can be used in packaging, tableware, cosmetic and pharmaceutical bottles, disposable medical supplies, agricultural films, slow-release materials for pesticides and fertilizers, and biomedical polymer materials.
